Brieva de Cameros aparece de repente entre el manto verde. Estamos escondidos en el Valle del Najerilla, junto a un asentamiento que une el río Berrinche con el bravo nacimiento del Brieva. Mientras paseamos por calles serenas, a ratos casi intactas, nos dicen que a unos cuantos cientos de metros el agua brota del suelo como si fuese una aparición. Más allá, asciende una ruta, que en realidad es un reto, hacia Cabezo del Santo, la cumbre que sonríe sobre nosotros (1.854 metros).

Seguimos el curso del Alto Leza. De acuerdo al testamento geológico, pisamos el suelo más antiguo de toda La Rioja. Hace 120 millones de años, por aquí caminaron saurios gigantes que dejaron impresas sus huellas para siempre. En este entorno, hace unos cuantos milenios, germinaron asentamientos humanos. Todas las cimas tienen historias que son Reserva de la Biosfera. Y por las calles que habitan la Sierra, abundan los ilustres. Políticos, empresarios, religiosos, indianos. El Camero viejo no olvida.

De los veintiún pueblos que decoran estas montañas, catorce continúan habitados. Un camino curvoso nos conduce hacia el corazón del cuerpo rocoso. Alcanzamos una población con muchas caras y todas semejantes. Asoma la piedra en las plantas bajas pero más arriba crecen el adobe y la cal. Vidas uniformes. Laguna de Cameros nos recibe impoluta sobre alfombras empedradas. Por estas tierras, los nombres mudan en cada muga. Bajo nosotros, discurre el río Mayor, que en San Román es el Leza.
