Stage 5, Lumbreras - Puerto de Piqueras
- 4 h 50 min
- 10.8 km
This stage coincides with the last part of a marked route of the Natural Park of the Cebollera Mountains: the Roman Road Footpath, that has the same route between Villoslada and Puerto de Piqueras. Leave the centre of Lumbreras on the forest trail that coincides with the old path to the village of San Andrés and that passes next to some cattle warehouses. You will reach a small stream, after which you will enter the meadow through a gate. Continue down a by-path among oaks, that become bigger and bigger, and cross a pontoon bridge and a wood bridge with stone buttresses over the Cañada Ancha Stream. Afterwards you will start ascending more steeply on a path of flat stone until you reach the Alto de San Andrés. From there, you will exit the meadow through another gate and descend to the village of San Andrés next to a two pipe fountain. Once in San Andrés, from the Ethnographic museum go down the Calzada Real. Leave the church on the right and continue down the street until you reach the connection with the national road. Cross the road and descend a few metres down a route with a metal handrail. Cross the wood bridge over the Piqueras River. The path ascends slightly parallel to the river and crosses the ravines of Revillosa and Amenamen with stone cubes and a bridge. When you reach a wood bridge, cross the Piqueras River again to be on the right riverside. Go up among pines until you reach Venta de Piqueras, after crossing a wood bridge over the river again. From here, go behind the transept that dominates the plain and start ascending among pines and beeches following the wide cattle route. After going up the cattle route, when the forest starts disappearing, you will arrive at Puerto de Piqueras, at a height of 1,768 metres. From here you can see a great view of the mountains of the Iberian System from La Rioja and Soria, and of the Roman path towards Numancia.
