Stage 3, San Millán de La Cogolla - Anguiano

  • 6 h 52 min
  • 22.11 km

San Millán de la Cogolla (00 min) Exit the village following Mayor street. When you reach number 69, turn right and follow the Monastery wall until you reach the river, where you should position yourself on the left to continue towards the road. Cross the bridge and take a trail on the right next to a warehouse. Trail (12 min) Follow the trail after a short ascent, ignoring a trail on the left. You will reach an elevated area with croplands and great views of the Monastery. Several paths. First turn left and then right towards some pine trees at the edge of the forest. Pines (23 min) The path turns into a route that ascends among a holm oak forest. When you arrive at a river bed, ignore the route that ascends left, cross the river bed and continue up among holm oaks. Change hillsides and go towards the southeast until you reach a trail on the edge of the beech grove. Trail (43 min) Continue on the trail to the right, under a crag. After crossing under a beech grove, you will have great views of the San Millán Valley, La Demanda Mountains, Pazuengos and the deserted village of Ollora. Hill (1 h) When you reach a hill, change to the Iruela River hillside and go up a trail towards the Corrales de Ortuño. Next to these pens, you find a trail crossing. Take the one on the left to descend to the bottom of a pine forest. The path goes along its edge and, during the last stretch, after an incline, it leads to a trail that goes up. After a few metres, after a curve, you will reach another trail that leads to the left. Stream (1 h 28 min) A stream with permanent water crosses the trail. Continue ascending among pines, ignoring a trail crossing after 10 minutes, until you reach the first pronounced curve. Here, take the route on the left. Route (1 h 50 min) A smooth ascent route through the interior of the beech grove leads to a small flat area. Cross it and descend to the right on the opposite hillside. After a 5 minute descent, exit the footpath to the right to change to the Tobía River hillside. You will reach a needle furze area that you must cross to get to a trail. Descend the trail towards the left for 10 minutes, until you reach some ruins. Ignore a trail on the left. Corrales de Ocijo (2 h 14 min) Descend the main trail and, after the last pen, go down a steep slope on the right and descend a route in a Pyrenean oak forest. After 600 metres, a pedestrian crossing clears the fence that delimits the forest. Descend among needle furzes and cross a trail. Then, cross pastures towards the southeast. Next to the remains of a pen, you will start a steep descend. Descent (2 h 37 min) During the first stretch the zigzagging allows to avoid the steep slope. Continue among needle furzes and pastures to the east until you reach a first embankment, where you turn northeast until you reach a second embankment 20 minutes after starting the descent. This second embankment has rocks with milestones from which you can sight the village and the crags of Tobía that are being formed. After zigzagging among needle furzes, descend towards a ravine following the edge of a pasture. Turn right and continue on the bottom of the ravine. A little after, you will reach a well-marked footpath and descend on the left side. After passing the last rocky crag, you will reach Tobía. Tobía (3 h 12 min) The village is accessed through the upper part of the church. From here, go down the main street. Follow it to the left to the end of the village. Where the paved road starts, at the last houses, go to the left on Regajal street. Trail (3 h 18 min) Next to the last house, take the trail to the right. The one on the left leads to Villaverde. The path ascends over the cemetery and it arrives at a flat area with croplands. At the crossroads, take the one on the right and border the fields going along the slope limit for 500 metres. Descend a trail with a steep slope.

Natural values

Mountain area with a good forest cover, with beech groves, Pyrenean oak, holm oak, Portuguese oak and reforested pine trees. Between Tobía and Anguiano, there are highly unique cliffs of conglomerate rock and limestone, of great importance for rock-nesting birds. This area is included within the land under the Natura 2000 network (Mountain ranges of Demanda, Urbión, Cebollera and Cameros), which comprises both the SPAB (Special Protection Area for Birds) and the SCI (Site of Community Importance) previously designated with the same denomination. Besides, already outside this area, the footpath crosses some interesting cereal fields in Matute, which are the natural habitat for nesting Montagu's harriers.
