Alfaro is a city and municipality within the autonomous region of La Rioja. Alfaro is in the east of the province, in the Lower Rioja area. It is the main city in the district of Alfaro and the largest municipality in the whole of La Rioja; it borders the autonomous region of Navarre. On the 1 January 2009, the population was 9,883 according to data from the Spanish national institute of statistics (INE). It is the fifth most populated city after Logroño, Calahorra, Arnedo and Haro. The River Ebro crosses the north of the municipality and the River Alhama flows into the Ebro having encircled Alfaro to the west.

-Economy: The area's biggest industry is food and agriculture with around,60,000 hectares of irrigated land, where fruit and vegetables are grown. Secondary activities include a large canning industry and wood and furniture businesses. Chair production is particularly important and so are products connected to the construction industry: tiles and bricks. The tertiary sector and industry are also important in Alfaro.
Historic city centre with eccentric streets; mansions with Aragonese Mudejar influence, in brick. San Miguel Collegiate Church. National monument. 17th and 18th centuries. It has three naves of similar height and two towers at the base that frame the Classicist facade with three entrances with triumphal arch. In its interior it houses Baroque reredos of great value, among which those of Juan de Arregui (dated 1727) and two crucifixes (one ivory of the 17th c. and another Gothic of the 14th c.) stand out. The black and white ivory tomb of Manuel Pérez de Araciel, archbishop of Zaragoza, can be seen there. Santa María del Burgo Church. Building of a single nave with chapels, transept and rectangular chancel, that mixes Classicist and Baroque elements. The highlights of the interior are the Rococo reredos of the main altar and a Baroque painting in the transept. La Concepción Convent Church. Dated 17th century, it has a single nave and portico with wooden doors. The interior houses the Rococo reredos of the main altar and the Baroque image of the Immaculate Conception. San Francisco Church. With a Classicist style, it has three naves, transept and rectangular chancel with a facade flanked by two towers. In its interior it has an interesting Baroque reredos and valuable paintings of the Epiphany and the Marriage of the Virgin. In the San Miguel Collegiate Church is one of the most important white stork colonies of Europe.
